NCERT Curiosity | Class 6 Science | Chapter 8 | NCERT Solutions | 2026–27
Water exists as solid, liquid and gas. Heating and cooling can change water from one state to another.
Clean Notes – A Journey through States of Water
1. Three States of Water
Water is the same substance in different states.
Ice has a fixed shape. Liquid water flows and takes the shape of its container. Water vapour spreads through available space.
2. Melting and Freezing
Freezing: Liquid → Solid on cooling.
3. Evaporation
Evaporation is the change of liquid water into water vapour. It can happen even below the boiling point.
4. Factors That Affect Evaporation
- Larger exposed surface area → faster evaporation
- Higher temperature → faster evaporation
- More air movement → faster evaporation
- Higher humidity → slower evaporation
5. Cooling Effect of Evaporation
Evaporation uses heat from the surroundings, so the surface left behind becomes cooler.
6. Condensation
Condensation is the change of water vapour into liquid water. Water droplets outside a cold glass come from water vapour in the surrounding air.
7. Boiling
When water is heated strongly, it changes rapidly from liquid into vapour. This is called boiling.
8. Water Cycle
The continuous movement of water between Earth’s surface and the atmosphere is called the water cycle.
9. Water Conservation
Usable water is limited. We should avoid wastage and keep rivers, lakes and other water bodies free from pollution.
NCERT Class 6 Science Chapter 8 – Question Answers
A Journey through States of Water – Textbook Exercise Solutions
Answer: Condensation is the conversion of water vapour into liquid water. The correct option is the one describing water vapour changing into liquid water.
Answer: Evaporation is important when using water colours and when writing with an ink pen because water or another liquid part evaporates after application.
Answer: Natural grass loses water through transpiration and evaporation. Evaporation removes heat and produces a cooling effect.
Answer: Examples include alcohol, petrol and perfume.
Answer: Moving air carries away water vapour from the wet surface. This increases the rate of evaporation and speeds up drying.
Answer: Water in the sludge evaporates with time. The sludge becomes drier and easier to handle and transport.
Answer: Drying clothes, drying washed utensils and wet floors involve evaporation. Understanding it helps us dry things faster and use cooling methods effectively.
Answer: It occurs as ice and snow, especially in high mountains and polar regions.
Answer: We depend on water for life, so we must prevent pollution, avoid wastage and protect water resources for present and future use.
Answer: Move it to shade and place a wet cloth on the seat. Evaporation of the water removes heat and cools the seat.
Important Extra Questions and Answers
